English as an Additional language
The WBAIS English as an Additional Language (EAL) program is committed to empowering students to achieve full English proficiency, recognizing its importance for both academic and social success. Our program creates a safe and inclusive learning environment by offering a rigorous and comprehensive academic English curriculum while honoring the cultural and linguistic diversity of our students.
At WBAIS, we understand that language acquisition is a long-term process requiring instruction in listening, speaking, reading diverse texts, and engaging in writing activities across all subject areas. We also acknowledge that each student’s educational background, first language proficiency, learning and cognitive style, motivation, and personality significantly influence their pace of language development.
With a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach and a shared dedication, the EAL Department works to enhance the literacy and academic skills of every English language learner. Instruction focuses on developing transferable academic language, oral communication, vocabulary expansion, reading comprehension, writing proficiency, and effective learning strategies.
Each school division offers a tailored program to meet the specific needs of English language learners, ranging from small group classes to co-teaching models.
Upon enrollment, students take a language proficiency assessment to determine their instructional level. Their language development and progress are closely monitored and evaluated throughout the school year using WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment) standards and tools. This ensures instruction is aligned with best practices and effectively supports students’ growth in English proficiency.
