My name is Shelley Bar-El and this is my fourteenth year as the Middle School counselor at WBAIS. Before that I worked as a special education teacher in the Resource Center for many years; however my acquaintance with WBAIS goes even further back as I graduated from this high school in 1977!
I have a BA in Psychology and earned my MSc in Psychology - specializing in Guidance Counseling - from Northwestern University. I chose to work with middle school students because I enjoy the challenge of helping pre-teens navigate the terrain while transitioning from childhood into adolescence with an eye towards adulthood.
I believe the experience of having been a student, then a teacher, and now a counselor at WBAIS gives me a unique perspective. Since I am very aware of the need to stay current on new issues in counseling and strategies for dealing with them, I am a member of both the ISCA (International School Counselor Association) and the ASCA (American School Counselor Association), and I attend conferences sponsored by these organizations and others every couple of years.
When not at work, you will probably find me either at home with my husband, two children, and three dogs, playing bridge, or at the gym (not my first choice :P).
