Students are more responsive and engaged when the teaching is culturally competent resulting in a greater awareness of different cultures, a deeper understanding of context, an ability to see multiple perspectives, reduction of barriers between different cultural groups, and leading to more productive and positive learning environments.

Increasing connections to the local and global communities increases an awareness and appreciation of students’ roles as citizens, helps them feel a deeper sense of community, connects them to world events, helps them feel "seen", and fosters community cohesion. A community-wide focus on celebrating our diverse community will bring us together and will lead to opportunities to utilize community members in sharing their perspectives and culture.

A focus on developing student awareness and sensitivity to cultural differences leads to greater self and social awareness, helps students reflect on their own biases, enhances self-esteem and empathy.
